Leading Word Education

Leading Word Education teaches adults in Scarborough and the greater Toronto area to read and write English. The organization works with immigrants, refugees, and Canadian-born adults who missed opportunities to develop literacy skills, offering one-on-one tutoring and small group classes at no cost to participants. Volunteers and staff focus on practical language skills for work, daily life, and family communication. The charity recognizes that adult literacy affects employment prospects, health outcomes, and social participation, and it removes barriers by meeting learners where they are, whether in community centers, libraries, or other accessible locations. Each person receives instruction tailored to their starting point and goals, from foundational letter recognition through intermediate proficiency levels.
