Wanasah: Mental Health Services for Black Youth
Wanasah provides mental health support and arts-based programming specifically for Black youth in Toronto, recognizing the intersection of cultural identity and psychological wellbeing. The organization uses creative expression through visual arts, music, performance, and storytelling as pathways to healing and self-discovery. Trained counselors and artists work together to help young people process trauma, build resilience, and develop coping skills in spaces designed to feel culturally affirming and safe. Wanasah's approach acknowledges that Black youth often face unique mental health barriers including racism, systemic discrimination, and limited access to culturally competent care. By integrating arts practice with clinical support, the organization creates opportunities for young people to reclaim narratives about themselves and their communities while strengthening their emotional wellbeing.
