Centre for Northern Conservation
The Centre for Northern Conservation works to address food insecurity in northern Ontario communities by supporting local food systems and sustainable agricultural practices. The organization partners with Indigenous groups and remote settlements to develop food production capabilities suited to harsh climates, including greenhouse operations, seed saving programs, and hunting and fishing practices that sustain traditional diets. By strengthening local food networks rather than relying on expensive imported goods, the Centre helps reduce both hunger and the carbon footprint associated with transporting food to isolated regions. The Toronto-based foundation also advocates for policy changes that recognize the unique food security challenges facing northern populations and funds research into climate-resilient crops adapted to boreal conditions.
